Research Rationale

I have access to a target group aged 16-18 years old. This will mean that my target audience will preferably be aged between those ages when producing my horror trailer. They are friends as well as my peers. Some of them attend the college and some of them do not. I will conduct my audience research by doing survey’s, interviews and focus groups. I will also discuss people’s fears. I believe that this will be useful as I will be able to find out people’s interest in horror, whether they enjoy it or not. If they do not enjoy it, I therefore will not continue to use the same people in my focus group because it will be pointless as they do not enjoy horror. This will also give me a clear view of how close I am to create my horror trailer with the information I have been given.

I believe that if I do survey’s, interviews and create a focus group at the end, this will enable me to conduct my research a lot quicker than just asking random people. As I already have a target audience I want to aim my horror trailer at, I know that horror isn't for everyone, meaning that not everybody enjoys horror. This will therefore allow me to do an interview with the people I know enjoy horror and then will allow me to create a focus group based on the research I have conducted. The people from my focus group will be my overall target audience as I will listen to information they have given me about the horror genre. This includes questions such as what they enjoy about horror and what motivates them to watching it. Also, what makes a good horror trailer? 

I will need to create a questionnaire which will allow me to come up with questions I will ask my possible target audience. Potential questions would involve, do you like horror? This automatically gives me a clear indication of people I will need in my focus group.  I will also need a microphone and camcorder to film the interviews and focus groups. I will need a camera too, just in case the filming does do not come out as clear and focused as I would like them too. To conclude I will need people. They are the ones that are giving me the information and without them I will not be able to continue being in the process of creating my horror trailer. Similarly, I don’t think that a horror trailer can be successful without people’s opinions.
